After trouncing Iowa 89-67 in their first meeting at Mackey Arena, the Boilermakers rolled into Iowa City on a mission to complete a season sweep of the Hawkeyes.
The first half was highlighted by Caleb Swanigan’s 13 points and 7 rebounds as Purdue closed out the half with a 9-point lead. Going into halftime after posting 47 points, all looked promising for the Boilers.
Unfortunately, Purdue came out flat at the start of the second half. Iowa went on a scorning run which completely erased the lead and confidence that Purdue had created. The Boilers battled back tough though, as the lead changed hands 20 times throughout the game.
One of the main reasons Purdue posted only a mere 31 points in the second half was due to the collapse in connecting on three-point shots. After hitting almost every three-point shot in the first half, the game ended with Purdue only shooting 39.3% from beyond the arch.
Caleb Swanigan had a fantastic opportunity to tie the game with only seconds remaining but choked and left an easy shot short. The missed threes continued to plague the Boilermakers when Dakota Mathias’ potential game tying shot was off the mark with only seconds remaining.
Although there are still many games to be played, this loss could haunt Purdue and their quest to be conference champions. After the loss, Purdue fell in the standings as Michigan State continues to drive the Big 10 Bus.
